- 2.5-GHz (or higher) x64 processor for systems with a single-core CPU; 1.5-GHz (or higher) x64 processor for systems with a multicore CPU; 1.5 GHz (or higher) x64 processors for systems with multiple physical CPUs
- 4 GB RAM for management and messaging servers; 2 GB for security server

- At least one domain controller in the domain must be running Windows Server 2003 with SP1 or SP2, or Windows Server 2008.
- Other existing domain controllers must be running Windows 2000 Server with SP4, Windows Server 2003 with SP1 or SP2, or Windows Server 2008.
- Essential Business Server is not compatible with domain controllers that are running Windows NT. These must be removed from the network before installation.
- The functional level for your existing domain must be Windows 2000 Server native mode or Windows Server 2003.
- The Active Directory schema level for your existing domain must be set to Windows Server 2008. Your existing schema is updated to this level during installation.
- The schema master must be running Windows Server 2003 with SP1 or SP2, or Windows Server 2008.
- At least one global catalog must be running on Windows Server 2003 with SP1 or SP2, or Windows Server 2008.
- Essential Business server supports a maximum of 300 users or devices.
- The management server must be the root domain controller of the forest.
- The management server must hold the flexible single master operations (FSMO) roles.
- You cannot create any interforest trusts.
- You cannot create any child domains.
- Terminal Services Application Mode is disabled.
- The messaging and security servers must be member servers of the EBS 2008 domain.
- Under the Software Assurance programme, customers acquire the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of their coverage.
- The management server's Administration Console provides a single view of overall server health, security status, managed computers and devices, managed users and groups, software license compliance, and server software components.
- Workstations with Internet connections can securely access email, internal Web sites, network files, and business applications; any Internet-connected computer or Windows Mobile–based Smartphone can remotely and securely access email, schedules, and contacts.
- The Administration Console's Security page allows monitoring and management of the included anti-spam and email antivirus components, enterprise-level network firewall, and software updates from a single console. A green check indicates that the system component is healthy, or the interface details actions necessary for attaining green-check status.
- Essential Business server is extensible, meaning additional management capabilities can be enabled as they become available from Microsoft or third-party software companies. Both Microsoft and non-Microsoft components can be accessed from within the Administration Console.
Essential Business Server 2008 Standard Edition provides midsize organizations with enterprise-level management, messaging, and security to support up to 300 users. It runs on three servers and is manageable from a single administrative console.
Essential Business Server 2008 Standard Edition requires x64 hardware.
Server Technologies: Essential Business Server 2008 Standard includes three instances of Windows Server 2008 Standard technologies and can be installed on three separate servers.
The management server provides a centralized administration console and core infrastructure services with these server technologies:
- A Windows Server 2008 core installation for basic server tasks, including network tools and network security; file, print, and application sharing; and firewall protection
- System Center Essentials 2007 for managing the IT environment
- SharePoint Services for sharing internal documents and other resources (downloaded as part of the setup process)
The messaging server provides a secure, isolated communications system with these server technologies:
- An additional Windows Server 2008 core installation
- Exchange Server 2007 for email, messaging, personal information management, and shared calendaring
- Forefront Security for Exchange Server for email protection from viruses, worms, and spam (one-year subscription)
The security server provides network security services, Internet access, and remote worker connectivity with these server technologies:
- A third installation of core Windows Server 2008 technologies
- An additional installation of Exchange Server 2007, configured in the Edge Transport Role for improved antivirus and anti-spam protection
- Forefront Threat Management Gateway for protection against Internet-based threats and secure remote access to applications and data (one-year subscription)
